This has happened to everyone in their life at least once..You know when you hurt yourself in an embarrassing way around other people, but you play it off like it was funny more than it hurt to cover yourself up? That’s exactly how I felt tonight watching the All-Star game on the terrible Versus channel. I was stuck in between wanting to laugh and cry out of embarrassment because the skills comp coverage this year was 100 times worse than the two previous years on Versus (the home of hockey (lol), which I thought would be impossible to trump. They crossed the widest rivers, climbed the highest mountains and went to places where no other man has gone to make sure they’d screw this up more than ever.
How many more years is Versus going to need to prepare for this two and a half hour skills event once a friggin year to get it right? They still can’t get the clock to work on the fastest skater competition. They still keep putting the camera angle partially behind the player during the target shooting contest so you can’t see all the damn targets. How about the Youngstars game? The viewers missed a total of 3 live goals because they kept cutting away to replays THAT WEREN’T EVEN WORTH REPLAYS! It does not get worse than that folks. I hope some guys get fired tonight.
I’m not gonna rant about the corny opening ceremony but I want it to be known it was atrocious in case you were wondering the same. There were a bunch of other little things that ticked me off like the rap music being played during the trick shot challenge (nothing against rap, but this is not basketball) and how they had Pat Lafontaine doing an interview about some sick hospital he does charity for during the whole 3rd period of the Youngstars game. We all feel bad, but it was making me sleepy. I guess they were not expecting an exciting 3rd period?
As I was watching I was trying to remember all that was bad because it was coming at me fast and often, and to be honest it was becoming entertaining. I knew I wanted to write a blog piece about it but didn’t have a pen and pad in sight to keep a memo of all the stuff that was going on, so I couldn’t remember it all. I’ll just leave the rant at that, and to say I’m embarrassed to be a hockey fan tonight is the understatement of the year. Let’s hope many new hockey fans had something better to do tonight.
Now there was some good, so here is a recap of the pros.
Skills comp pros:
– Hockey players showed personality, especially Ovechkin impersonating Don Cherry.
– Zdeno Chara broke the hardest shot record. 105.4 MPH.
– Marc Savard mic’d up. He seems like a real cool guy and kept me entertained.
– Players falling over ice advertisements
Let’s hope they don’t screw up a simple All-Star game tomorrow.
