I’m not the one to look at ads on websites, but I happened to notice the other day that on NHL.com they have a big Spike TV banner across the top of the front page. For people who don’t know, Spike TV is almost exactly like the Versus channel in the programs they air. Which are cage fighting, rodeo stuff and all the other random action sports, which leaves me thinking why the heck the NHL is promoting Versus rival station. Spike TV in America is a basic cable station meaning it reaches around 90 million homes compared to Versus which is not a main cable station and reaches around 70 million homes. Spike TV was recently in some sort of crisis where they were going to lose 13 million homes – Read about it here.
Spike TV as far as I know has never aired a major sport. So now I ask, is this a sign the NHL could be moving to a more available/more respectable TV station down the road, or is this just your regular web ads? One could only wish they’d rid of Versus, but it sure does have me thinking why the NHL didn’t try/couldn’t land a deal with them in the first place.
