Last night in the preseason game between the Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs, Ryan Miller of the Sabres was wearing a helmet cam that was literally strapped on top of his goalie mask. Jason Pominville of the Sabres was also wearing a helmet cam. They both looked like coal miners. It had to be the ugliest things I have ever seen.
I think the whole idea of being able to see in-game action from that point of view is cool, as long as the cams are built into the helmet to the point where they are practically invisible.
I’m not exactly sure where the NHL plans on taking this. Maybe it’s just an experiment, maybe it’s just a pre-season thing, maybe the Sabres decided on doing it. I have no idea, all I know it’s very ugly and hopefully just disappears.
You can see in this highlight video below the cam on Ryan Miller’s helmet the best at the 1:01 mark. You can see Pominville’s from the :28 second mark to the :34 second mark sitting in front of the net then taking a shot.
